Coughs occur for various reasons
It is a symptom of illness or of an irritation to the respiratory system
It can be related to asthma, bronchitis, the common cold, croup, pneumonia, whooping cough, chemical irritation or irritation from a foreign body present in the lung
A cough can be described as loose and productive, or dry and tight
what you can do
- herbs can help relax the respiratory system and loosen the mucous in the lungs making it easier to expectorate
- thyme is one of the herbs, which acts by soothing irritable coughs, reducing spasm and loosening mucous
- the essential oil of thyme can also be used in an oil burner to act as an anti-microbial and antiseptic
- slippery elm is another very useful herb for coughs of any type
- slippery elm powder can be mixed with water and eaten as a food which will soothe and heal all the mucous membranes throughout the body
- flaxseed can be ground into a powder made into a poultice
- flaxseed is soothing for irritable coughs and can be used to help relieve lung infections such as bronchitis
- drink plenty of fluids to help keep the lung secretions moist and moving
- coughs should not be suppressed with cough mixtures. Instead the body should be supported with diet and herbs
- other herbs that may be beneficial are marshmallow root, and licorice root
- if infection is present olive leaf extract can be taken as directed on the bottle
